I have helped countless women and couples through the years address their cycle irregularities and reproductive health problems by journeying with them through their struggles while they sought treatment with NaProTechnology. It has been a blessing to be able to offer this alternative to women and couples. I honestly was not sure if I would need NaProTechnology myself but I was always grateful that it was available to me in case I did need it. And, sure enough, here I am, 13 years into my teaching career, beginning pre-menopause, having birthed 6 children and lost 1 through miscarriage, having to begin my own journey.
When I first began charting in my 20s as a young, engaged woman, I had that perfect cycle shown in the Introductory Session. It was easy and simple and things were very predictable. I have since lost my chart but it looked something like this one. Then, babies came into the picture. I tell you babies are such a blessing but boy do they mess with your hormones and cycles. Each baby seemed to push my cycles into more randomness and my pretty, predictable cycle was never to be seen again. After each pregnancy, I felt like I was Forrest Gump, “Cycles are like a box of chocolate, you never know what you’re gonna get.” For those of you too young to remember that movie, you need to rent it because it is great. Oh, and you make me feel old. Ha!
I have been grateful to be using the Creighton Model during these times of irregularity because it has helped me manage my cycles until they returned to some sort of a pattern, albeit different and including yellow stamps at times. For me, embracing the randomness has become a part of my life parenting six children, and so it has just naturally extended into my fertility as well.
But, then the craziness happened. After having my 5th child, the devastating loss of my Maryrose through miscarriage, and another baby, my cycles have gone beyond random to the point of crazy and unpredictable. I know it may not look like it from a quick glance at my current chart, but it has become harder to define fertility and I have many mucus patches and unpredictable post-peak phases. I have been experiencing dry cycles, limited mucus cycles, continuous mucus, long and short post-peak phases as well as PMS throughout most if not all of my cycle. I feel like a mess of a person. I have bloating, difficulty losing weight, irritability most of the month, hair loss, hair growth in the wrong places, difficulty concentrating and my breasts hurt all of the time. Some days it is hard to get through the day due to these symptoms. As you can imagine, I have been a joy to be around. It has begun to take its toll on my family life and my marriage. I find myself longing for the cycles of my 20s, but I have to accept that I am now 40 and those days are long gone.
What options do I have in this situation? Well, if I sought a regular ob/gyn, they would likely prescribe some sort of hormonal birth control to “regulate” my cycles. But because of my fertility care education, I know better. I need a medical treatment that will address the underlying cause of my irregularities and my PMS symptoms. I need a medical treatment that will work in cooperation with my cycle using treatment that works with my body and not against it. NaProTechnology is my only real solution to my reproductive health problems.
I am blessed because now I can visit a local NaProTechnology Medical Consultant close to me. After procrastinating for months, I have finally made my appointment for next week. I am really looking forward to finally getting help and hopefully get back to some semblance of normalcy with my cycles. And for once, I am actually looking forward to going to the doctor.
