Today I have a guest post from Dr. Emily Puente, a chiropractor who specializes in fertility and pregnancy. Dr. Puente is talking to us today about the role of Chiropractic care in fertility and pregnancy.
The benefits of chiropractic care are seen in all types of people, but the ones that have the biggest impact on myself are the ones in which families are grown or made stronger.
The role of a chiropractor is to remove subluxations or interferences of the nervous system. This is done by providing adjustments to the spine, releasing tension in muscles or ligaments and providing a means to allow for the nervous system, which is the master system of the body, to function as it was designed and provide an environment conducive for self-healing and potentially LIFE creating!
With my additional education in the care of pregnant women and pediatrics, I have had the privilege of caring for women prior to, during and after the birth of their children. This has been the ultimate gift to be a part of this and to provide women with the empowerment that they need to know that God created us in a perfect image and is doing the same with the creation of their unborn children.
My purpose is to remove any interferences that will inhibit the process that we are inherently created with the innate intelligence to create new life. As a chiropractor I take no credit for the incredible design or intelligence of the human body.
I have women that come into my office with the desire to increase their fertility. While I would love for this to happen as well I always explain that my role in their healthcare is to provide their body with the ability to optimally function. This in turn results in women who become pregnant after having fertility issues.
The explanation behind this is that conceiving a baby is seen as a stress on the body of the woman and as such a body that is currently in a state of distress or system overload will not take on additional stress as a means of self-preservation. That state of stress could potentially harm themselves, the fetus or both and would not be an ideal decision for the body.
Chiropractic care has the role of clearing the nervous system of interference that has accumulated throughout a lifetime of bumps and falls which cause miscommunication between the brain and the body (reproductive organs specifically) promoting infertility.
Many women resort to IVF-assisted pregnancies after failed attempts of conceiving naturally which can not only be expensive ($10,000/attempt) but it can have long term health risks for both mother and baby born via this method.1 Women taking fertility drugs have to administer them via injection that they must give themselves repeatedly. These can cause bloating, abdominal pain, mood swings, and headaches.
A study was done with a group of 4559 children born between 1996-1999 as a result of IVF that found that these children experienced a more distressing perinatal period which would be the weeks before and after birth. The mothers had an increased risk of cesarean births and required more hospital care in comparison to the control group. The IVF children had a higher incidence of health problems and hospital visits.2
My job is to detect any interferences of the nervous system which would cause stress on the body and correct them, consult with my patients about environmental stressors that they can remove, and discuss the incorporation of vital nutrients that their body may be deficient in by eating a diet rich in whole foods. Each person is different and it may take some women longer than others to achieve their desired state where their body would be able to carry on the role of nurturing new life.
After we have the amazing news of a positive pregnancy test or if I have a pregnant mother who comes into my office seeking care, my role during their pregnancy is to maintain proper nervous system functioning to allow for optimal growth and development of the baby.
The rate at which a child develops in utero is nothing short of stunning! At just 16 days post conception the neural plate of a baby will form which is what the brain will derive from at start to form the different parts of the brain at just 6-7 weeks!
A baby’s heartbeat can be heard with a fetoscope or Doppler as early as 10 weeks. At this fast developing rate it is crucial that mom is under care to allow for her baby to have every resource available to provide the best environment for growth and development.
As mom grows throughout the pregnancy she will experience biomechanical changes in her body that will affect how she carries her weight which can have deleterious effects if not properly assessed and corrected.
Visiting with a chiropractor on a maintenance basis ensures that both mom and baby are as healthy and comfortable as possible. A chiropractor who has gone through courses with the ICPA (International Chiropractic Pediatric Association) has the opportunity to receive specialized training to learn The Webster Technique.
This adjusting technique allows for correction of misalignments in the sacrum and SI joints of the pelvis as well as removal of tension from surrounding muscles and ligaments to allow for the most favorable neuro-biomechanical connection with the body. This will allow for baby to assume the optimal positioning in utero and in turn hope to allow for the best birth possible.
