Surviving Endometriosis: One Woman's Journey to Healing

Surviving Endometriosis and overcoming infertility

If you would see Nicole today, with her loving husband George, beautiful daughter Claire and second baby on the way, you would never know that she struggled for many years with a painful disease, endometriosis.

Endometriosis (from endo, “inside”, and metra, “womb”) occurs in roughly 5 to 10% of women.  It is characterized by growth beyond or outside the uterus of tissue resembling endometrium, the tissue that normally lines the uterus.

For Nicole, her journey began back in August of 2005 when she awoke in the middle of the night with abdominal pains. Over the following months, her pain intensified and she went to her Ob/Gyn to be diagnosed as having endometriosis.  His advice was that she “should try to get pregnant.  Getting pregnant will stop the growth of the lining and ease your pain.”  She was a newlywed, not yet ready to start a family and confused that this was his solution to her problem.

Her frustration grew as she visited multiple doctors, each having their own opinion and solution to her intense pain.  Their solutions ranged from IBS medication, birth control pills and worst of all that she should just get over it because the pain was all in her head.   Her pain became so debilitating that it was affecting her daily life.  She longed for answers and found them with NaProTechnology™.

Through her training as a Creighton Model FertilityCare™ Practitioner, she was aware of the benefits of NaProTechnology™ and its successful treatment of endometriosis.  In May 2008, she began her treatment with Dr. Thomas Hilgers and the Pope Paul VI Institute.  Her treatment required multiple surgeries because as Dr. Hilgers states, “Surgical removal of endometriosis carries with it the best chance for success, both in terms of pain relief and in subsequent pregnancies.  However, if the surgeon is not adequately trained to be able to provide a good surgical approach which will remove the endometriosis while preventing subsequent adhesions, the chances for success are quite limited.”

After the surgery and recovery, her pain completely vanished.  She no longer felt pain at any point in her menstrual cycle, even leading up to her period.  She felt like a completely new woman!

NaProTechnology™ has since helped her achieve and maintain a pregnancy with her first child, Claire and her second baby, due this fall.
